Egypt Welcomes "Positive" Developments Between Lebanon`s Rival Parties
Cairo, May 16 (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - Egypt on Thursday hailed “good and positive” developments in Lebanon as the rival parties have agreed to avoid armed confrontations to pave the way for dialogue.
In a press release, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit described Lebanese rival politicians` agreement on restoring conditions to the pre-May 5 situation as “good and positive.”
He expressed hope that the much awaited-dialogue among the Lebanese factions would result in a settlement to the political crisis and bring about stability in Lebanon.
The text of the announced agreement reflects a balance and gives every faction in Lebanon the role it expects in a legal way, Abul Gheit said, hoping the agreement would help the Lebanese overcome recent difficult incidents.
Earlier in the day, an Arab ministerial delegation announced that the rival Lebanese blocs have agreed on refraining from using weapons in solving domestic issues.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr al-Thani, head of the delegation, said that all the Lebanese parties will attend an internal dialogue scheduled to open in Doha on Friday until an agreement is reached.
The Arab ministerial delegation, which arrived in Beirut on Wednesday, met members of the government and the Hezbollah-led opposition, who have been locked in a bitter political feud for 18 months.
The delegation came after Lebanon`s political crisis boiled to deadly clashes between pro and anti-government supporters, which left at least 72 people dead and about 200 others injured.
The clashes broke out on May 7 after the Lebanese cabinet decided to cease the private communication network of Hezbollah, and remove airport security chief Gen. Wafik Shqaier for alleged links to Hezbollah.
The cabinet withdrew the measures on Wednesday just before the arrival of the Arab delegation.(*)
